Dear Families,

Welcome to 2020!  We know this is going to be another wonderful year of working together to develop our learners’ knowledge, skills and capabilities across the curriculum and beyond!  All classes have made a fabulous start with staff working very hard to prepare our school (including setting up the new library space) and plan exciting learning opportunities for the start of the new school year.

A special welcome to our new students and their families who have joined us this year.  Welcome also to our new staff: Kathryn Gray teaching 5-6 B (Clark/Gray) on Fridays, Linda Hicks teaching 3-4D during Term 1, Shay Lobban (TA) Monday and Tuesdays, Josh Roberts (EFA) Fridays and Jeremy Reid (IT Support). We know our students and families will make each of these new staff members feel very welcome.

TPSA Welcome Back BBQ – Friday 21 February 5:30 – 7pm

Please join us for this event.  Classrooms will be open at 5:30pm for parents /carers to make a quick visit to see their child’s learning space for 2020.

A Library Launch will be held at 5:50pm with Kristina Marsh to briefly showcase our new library, located in the “fishbowl”, opposite the ECE playground and staff room. Please join her for a quick tour before the BBQ gets underway!

BBQ meat, sushi and drinks will be available for purchase in the quadrangle from 6pm, when teachers, staff and families join together to celebrate the start of another fantastic year here at TPS.  

Volunteer-help is required to run the event.  Please contact the TPSA if you can assist:

School Association AGM 10 March, 7pm

We need to elect a new chair alongside other vacant TPSA positions at our AGM in March. If you are interested in applying to hold one of the vacant positions on the TPSA please complete the form below and forward to Danielle Bresnehan (returning officer) prior to March 9th.

Australia-Asia BRIDGE School Partnerships Program

We are excited to announce that Taroona Primary has been selected as one of 8 schools Australia-wide to join the Asia Education Foundation (AEF) Australia-Asia BRIDGE School Partnerships Program.  Our school will be supported by the AEF to connect our teachers, students and school community with a primary school in French-speaking Vanuatu.  Anita Wood is the program coordinator and will be supported by Hilary Purdie to implement the partnership program, including a Pacific Islander Teacher Visit to our school early in Term 2.

TPS Water Polo Team

Andrew Cawthorn and Garry Carlos are keen to form a TPS water polo team (up to 10 players).  If your child is interested in learning a fun, low-impact sport please call Andrew (Ph: 0419 541 785) or Gary (ph: 0413 213 861).

5/6TN hit the ground running in 2020… We demonstrated our school vision of Creative Thinkers, Connected Learners, Inspired Leaders in order to design, build and evaluate our classroom layout. It was a difficult task that required us to listen to the ideas of others. We demonstrated confidence to share our ideas with people we had not previously worked with. We had to plan out roles – 25 of us moving furniture and following 1 design! We are happy with the result, and as we learn more about our own work habits, we are making little tweaks to make it a great learning space. Watch out for the exciting learning that we do in our creative space!

New 2020 Uniform Shop Hours – Thursdays – 2.45pm – 3.15pm


After consultation and feedback from the Taroona Primary community, we’ve introduced 3 new uniform items as a trial. These items will become permanent if sales trial is positive.

  • Polar Fleece Vests (Sizes 4 – 14) $40
  • Track pants with Reinforced Knees (Sizes 4, 6, 8 only) $47
  • Leggings (Girls Size 4 – 14) $35

We are seeking 2-3 volunteers to join our sushi packing roster on Friday morning’s in 2020 commencing in Term 1. This is a fun and easy task requiring around 1 hour from 9-10 am. Volunteers are rostered subject to their specified availability e.g. once a fortnight or once every 4-6 weeks, whatever suits you! You work in pairs with another volunteer in the school staff room. A Working with Vulnerable People Check is essential. If you could do a buddy shift before the end of the year, that would be great also but if you cannot, we are happy to train you up at the start of Term 1.

Student Absences

A reminder to parents/carers to advise the school office if their child is unable to attend school due to illness or any other reason.

A medical certificate is required if a child is absent due to illness for 5 days or more.

Signing Students in/out

To ensure we have an accurate record of student attendance in case of an emergency, we ask that any student arriving at school later than 9:00am or leaving for any reason during the school day be signed in or out at the school office.

Message to Students

If you need to get a message to your child, please contact the school before 2:15pm to ensure enough time for us to pass the message on.

Duty of Care

Please note that students are not to arrive before 8:30am. This is for the students’ protection and safety as there are no teachers on duty prior to 8:30am and classrooms remain locked until this time. Supervision is provided before and after school:

  • Playground (EXCLUDING PLAY WEST, BLUE COURTS & OVAL) 8:30 to 8:55am
  • Car park & bus area 2:50 to 3:05pm

School Volunteers – Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP)

All volunteers and helpers working within our school are reminded that they must have a current WWVP card.

To register go to the Department of Justice website and follow the instructions. Remember to select DoE and Taroona Primary School.

You will need to sign in at the office and show your card when helping at school or joining a school excursion.

The registration approval process can take several weeks, so new parents to the school, are encouraged to start their application as soon as possible. If you have a card please check that it is still current. Registration requires renewal every 3 years.


Lady Gowrie Taroona Before and After School Care operates from the hall each school day from 7:00-8:30 am (Before School Care) and 3:00-6:00 pm (After School Care), catering for children aged 4-12 years. We offer a safe and stimulating environment based on the children’s interests incorporating both indoor and outdoor play.  We employ trained Educators and provide a nutritious breakfast and afternoon tea each day.  Please contact the Lady Gowrie Outside School Hours Care Office on 6230 6806 or email us at for more information.
