Dear Families,

The count down is on until the 2019 Seaside Festival which starts at 11:00am on Saturday November 30.  The excitement and sense of anticipation is certainly growing across our community. Thank you to all the many family and community members who have been helping out with the extensive preparations for this much-loved event. See below for all of the ways that you can still assist the subcommittee to deliver a fantastic festival for everyone!  

Kids4Kids Conference

As an innovative, future focused school, guided by our vision Creative Thinkers, Connected Learners, Inspired Leaders, Taroona Primary students and staff were excited to be invited to participate in the 2019 Kids4Kids There’s no Planet B! Conference, held yesterday at the University of Tasmania. 

Our Year 2 students were invited to share their inquiries on swift parrots and sustainability and Year 5-6 students their inquiry into reducing school energy use. Our students delivered a total of four workshops for other schools as well as engaged with standout environmental educators and participated in a range of learning sessions and activities.

Our thanks are extended to Tasmania’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA), who supported our school to participate  by paying the bus expenses to and from the conference.  Congratulations to all students and staff involved.

Student Voice at Taroona Primary

It has been exciting to see so many student-led projects and initiatives taking shape across the school this term.  Here are a couple of examples that have come directly from the students to me in the last week.

Madeline (1-2TW) wrote to me about the amount of litter her class had collected in a 10-minute search of our playground last week and suggested a clean up day to address the problem.  I agreed that litter continues to be a problem that we needed to address and asked Madeline to speak to the whole school about it on Monday morning at assembly.  Madeline confidently stood up on the steps, shared the data that the class had collated and requested that the students support a clean up later in the day. Her enthusiasm for protecting our sea life and other animals from the impacts of litter was well-received by the other students and it is likely the student parliament will spend time early in the new school year talking about other measures we can put in place as a school to reduce the amount of litter ending up in our playground and waterways. Thank you 1-2TW and Madeline!

5-6 Gregson have also contacted me about a different concern they have become aware of, following their viewing of a ‘Behind the News’ story which outlined the impact of fires in New South Wales and Queensland on wildlife, especially Koalas.  Sophia and Gemma put together a flier and sought out support from our local business, The Picnic Basket on Friday afternoon. With support from the owners, Sophia and Gemma placed a donation box in the window, stating that all proceeds raised will be donated to Koalas in Care Inc.  In just 2 days approximately $40 was raised and the class is now thinking about other ways they can get the message out to the community to assist with this cause. Teachers are now in the final stages of completing class placements. Thank you to all parents / carers who have contributed to this process.  We will have 14 classes in 2020. Class structures are listed below.

Now only 10 days away, the Taroona Seaside Festival will be on Saturday 30 November from 11am – 3pm. The final countdown is on after many months of planning and preparation. 

We hope you can come along and enjoy the many activities, games, food and entertainment that’s on offer. Not to mention the incredible line up of stalls selling all sorts of fantastic items. Come and celebrate the day with your family and friends. The Seaside Festival is our School’s biggest fundraiser, drawing in crowds of people to enjoy the Festival atmosphere while helping raise much needed money for our School.


LIKE  the Taroona Seaside Festival Facebook Page and invite your friends to as well. Be in the running to win a FREE DIP in our Adult Lucky Dip stall where you can win prizes valued up to $200! All you need to do is like and share the Festival’s page and you’re in the draw. 

SELL more Raffle Tickets! This year’s Raffle Prizes value have topped a massive $4250. There are loads of prizes and plenty of chances to win. Tickets are $2.50 each and more books available to sell at the School Office. There’s also a book-sellers prize for the person that sells the greatest number of tickets. 

DONATE items you have around the house. Our stallholders are still calling out for donations of gift items, toys and puzzles, plants, cotton fabric, produce and preserves and women and children’s good quality clothing, knitting/sewing items, plates, mugs and cutlery. A list of the DROP OFF points for the next week are on the flyer attached here and there will be a DROP ZONE for all final stall donations to be made at the GP Room on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th November 9am – 11am and 3pm to 5pm (only).

READ the information here about the important work our GREEN TEAM are doing leading up to and during the Seaside Festival. Their contribution instrumental in reducing waste and landfill produced by the Festival.

Grade 3-4 Parry have been doing a Mathematics inquiry into bottle flipping. This has been a highly popular activity, with many experts in the class. Our inquiry question was, “What fraction of a bottle needs to be filled with water to be the best for bottle flipping?”

Firstly, we had to identify which mathematics we would need to use in order to answer the inquiry question. We decided we would need to know about volume, fractions, data, graphs and division. We then had to decide how we would do a fair test.

The students worked collaboratively with their partners and we managed to have a lot of fun (whilst also doing some great maths).

Nature Play is about connection. Connection to ourselves, each other and planet. Spending time outside is great for us, it calms the frontal cortex, increases focus and creativity. Being outside makes us feel good, as bush walkers have always known. We can return to our lives and classrooms refreshed and more able to focus on work. These benefits are enhanced when we can slow down and take the time to tune in using our senses, this allows us to become more mindful.

Recently our Year 5-6 students used a simple black frame as photographers, artists and creative thinkers do, to tune in their eyes to see more, that’s how the frame works. It blocks out some areas and brings other detail into greater focus.

Some students made pictures within the frame and some simply noticed what they hadn’t before. “The ripples on the ocean from the wind.”

“That really colourful part of the rock.”

Simply put by one, “It makes it more beautiful here.”

This focused activity lead to creative thinking and design, using sand on the topic of sustainability. To fix the complex problems facing our environment today we need complex and creative solutions. We need to think differently then we ever have before. In Nature Play we tackle complex topics in a relaxed environment and, at times, students don’t even realise that is what they are doing.

Student Parliamentarians, Charlotte V and Jonte M meet with Nigel Richardson from TEN (Taroona Environment Network). The students ran a ‘Dress in Green’ day at Taroona Primary School and raised in excess of $300 to support TEN’s local revegetation work along the Taroona foreshore. Nigel came to a school assembly and spoke to all students about the work of the volunteer group, TEN.

After consultation and feedback from the Taroona Primary community, we’ve introduced 3 new uniform items as a trial. These items will become permanent if sales trial is positive.

Help needed

The Uniform Shop is managed and staffed by volunteers. Please contact Katie on if you would like to contribute to the school by volunteering at the Uniform Shop.


Student Absences

A reminder to parents/carers to advise the school office if their child is unable to attend school due to illness or any other reason.

A medical certificate is required if a child is absent due to illness for 5 days or more.

Signing Students in/out

To ensure we have an accurate record of student attendance in case of an emergency, we ask that any student arriving at school later than 9:00am or leaving for any reason during the school day be signed in or out at the school office.

Message to Students

If you need to get a message to your child, please contact the school before 2:15pm to ensure enough time for us to pass the message on.

Duty of Care

Please note that students are not to arrive before 8:30am. This is for the students’ protection and safety as there are no teachers on duty prior to 8:30am and classrooms remain locked until this time. Supervision is provided before and after school:

  • Playground (EXCLUDING PLAY WEST, BLUE COURTS & OVAL) 8:30 to 8:55am
  • Car park & bus area 2:50 to 3:05pm

School Volunteers – Working with Vulnerable People (WWVP)

All volunteers and helpers working within our school are reminded that they must have a current WWVP card.

To register go to the Department of Justice website and follow the instructions. Remember to select DoE and Taroona Primary School.

You will need to sign in at the office and show your card when helping at school or joining a school excursion.

The registration approval process can take several weeks, so new parents to the school, are encouraged to start their application as soon as possible. If you have a card please check that it is still current. Registration requires renewal every 3 years.


Lady Gowrie Taroona Before and After School Care operates from the hall each school day from 7:00-8:30 am (Before School Care) and 3:00-6:00 pm (After School Care), catering for children aged 4-12 years. We offer a safe and stimulating environment based on the children’s interests incorporating both indoor and outdoor play.  We employ trained Educators and provide a nutritious breakfast and afternoon tea each day.  Please contact the Lady Gowrie Outside School Hours Care Office on 6230 6806 or email us at for more information.
