PRINCIPAL NEWS

Dear Families

The term is racing away with many exciting events happening right across the school.  This week all Year 1-6 students will have the opportunity to see the Taroona High School Production, My Fair Lady, and this Thursday many Year 3-6 students will be heading to Bellerive Beach for the annual Schools Triathlon Event.

Acknowledgement

Recently I received a lovely email from Donna Taylor (Manager, Environment and Engagement at Hydro Tasmania) acknowledging the contribution of our 2016 Year 3 students and Mrs Purdie in the development of some fabulous student and teacher resources for schools on renewable energy in Tasmania.  In her email, Donna states:

Hilary’s Grade 3 class of 2016 … conducted some research for us and presented some graphs and data on the level of understanding that Tasmanian students have of where their energy comes from and how energy is produced in Tasmania. That data from the students, and students from other schools, was instrumental in us getting executive approval and funding for this program to proceed. It resulted in my team receiving funding to employ a full time education officer and design and deliver this program to Tasmanian schools, so the students should feel really proud of how they have helped to make that happen. I would like to thank them and Hilary for their contribution and enthusiasm – a great example of data leading to decisions and making a difference.

What a wonderful demonstration of our students learning through authentic engagement with the real world!  Please click on the link for more information. https://www.hydro.com.au/education

Volunteer Thank You

Next Monday, 10 December, I look forward to seeing many of our fabulous volunteers at our Volunteer Thank You Afternoon Tea, to be held in the staff room at 2:15pm. These wonderful people make such a difference to our classrooms, students and school as they support student learning in a wide variety of ways such as joining an excursion, assisting at sport carnivals, participating in working bees, listening to students read, helping students run hands-on Science, Art and other activities, talking to students about their work, and more. Everyone who has helped out this year is welcome to join us. Please RSVP to the office by tomorrow (Thursday) and advise of any dietary requirements.

End of Year Reporting, Class Placements & Assemblies

Student reports, K-6, are currently being finalised and will be sent home with students next Friday, 14 December. Please note that due to the recent industrial action, teacher comments will not be included in all reports.

2019 Class Placement information will be sent home with children on Monday 17 November.

Our Final Celebration of Learning Assembly will be held on Wednesday 19th December at Taroona High School, commencing at 12.30pm sharp! An online programme will be made available to the community via Facebook on Monday 17 December.  Please arrive early to ensure a seat is available as the event is always extremely popular!

The Leaver’s Assembly is to be held on Thursday 20 December from 1.30pm in our GP Room.  This formal event is held each year as invited guests and dignitaries celebrate the achievements of our Year 6 students and farewell staff, students and families who are leaving the school at the end of the year.  Priority reserved seating is made available for family members of our leavers, with siblings of Year 6 students and all classes from Years 3-6 also attending.

2019 Staffing and Classes

I would like to take this opportunity to advise the community of staffing and class arrangements for 2019.

We farewell three of our contract teachers at the end of the school year: Vanessa Barretto, John Murray and Ngaire Green, and will be welcoming Frances Thorp (AST Early Years) and welcoming back Anita Wood (French) and Janelle Stowe (Music) in 2019.

Peta Gilmour has decided to take Long Service Leave at the end of the year and will retire during 2019.  Peta’s many years of dedication to the students at Taroona Primary School will not go without an appropriate farewell and I know there will be a few tears at the leavers’ assembly when we thank her for her profound and positive impact on the hundreds of students she has taught whilst here at TPS.

Finally, Sheri Matthews has decided to transfer her permanent hours to the Department of Education’s E-School from 2019, to undertake a different direction in her work into the future.  On behalf of the community I would like to thank Sheri for her commitment to ensuing high quality learning support for the many students with whom she has worked during her eleven years here at the school and to acknowledge her outstanding creative input into TPS, both inside and outside our classrooms.

SOUTHERN CHAMPIONS SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Congratulations to all students who competed at the Champions Swimming Carnival last Tuesday.  Below are photos of some of our top 4 place getters.

Thank you to the TPSA!

Flexi Stools

A huge thank you to the TPSA. Their kind donations have allowed us to purchase a cart to transport equipment for our outdoor learning and also a number of flexi stools to be used across the 1/2 team. These stools have been purchased to allow for flexible seating to cater to the differing learning needs and preferences of the students. These stools, and other endorsed classroom equipment, are being rolled out across the year groups. Keep an eye out for these in 2019!

Home Reader Books

A huge thank you to the TPSA for their very kind donation of $550, earlier in the year for home reader books for students. These have been very popular! We are continuing to update our supply to ensure that we have a good range of non-fiction and fiction texts; and also to include decode-able phonics texts also.

All school home reader books are due back to classrooms, by Friday the 14th of December  to audit our collection and reallocate them for 2019 classes. Please have a good look through bookshelves and cupboards!

Thanks for your support.

EXTENDED LEARNING 2018

Taroona Primary School is committed to supporting every learner, every day. Part of teacher planning includes differentiating the learning within each classroom to allow each child to engage at a point that brings both challenge and success. This helps build the skills of being a great learner, such as setting personal goals, striving for excellence, “failing forwards” (building resilience to learn from mistakes), working with others and thinking creatively to solve challenges.

In addition to in-class differentiation, TPS provides a range of extension and enrichment opportunities across the learning areas of the curriculum. These are responsive to student needs and interests, and may change year to year. We continue to look for ways to further connect with community and external organisations to provide opportunities for our students.

2018 participation:

  • Australian Mathematics Competition
  • Bebras Computational Thinking competition
  • Tournament of Minds
  • Asia-Pacific Mathematical Olympiad
  • Australian History Challenge
  • Digital game design with UTAS students
  • Young Archies
  • Chess Club
  • Maths Olympiad
  • Choose Maths video competition
  • Debating
  • Gifted Online programs (Ad Astra, Infinity Squared, CodeXX)
  • Maths Relay
  • Junior and senior choir
  • Computational and Algorithmic Thinking competition
  • Online writers group
  • Mathematics Challenge for Young Australians (4 week / 10 week)
  • Alliance Francais
  • Grade 5/6 band at Taroona High School

We are grateful for the support of parents and UTAS student teacher volunteers to help make these opportunities a success for our students. It is wonderful that TPS teachers continue to invest their time to learn more about enrichment and extension through face to face and online professional learning throughout the year. We look forward to continuing to develop challenging and engaging learning opportunities for all TPS students in 2019. Please do not hesitate to get in touch if you have feedback or new ideas in this area. For a snapshot of some of the extension opportunities, please see attached infographic By the Numbers.
